Against the backdrop of the Syrian Uprising in 2012, a 19-year-old college freshman in Chicago becomes one of the most important communication coordinators for Syrian activists on the ground. In the face of death threats, Ala'a Basatneh sacrifices her friends and school work to spread awareness of protests online. Along the way, Ala'a befriends hundreds of protestors in her support for the cause, compiling a list of people and locations she hopes to visit after the violence. For many of them, Ala'a is the only friend they can fully trust, and they must rely upon her to help them build the numbers to shield off Bashar al-Assad's brutal regime. A powerful and gripping documentary, #ChicagoGirl tells the story of a generation compelled to end the terror and violence within their home country.
