ONCE UPON A CRIME: The Borrelli - Davis Conspiracy
(USA) RT:108min

Director: Sheldon Wilson (in attendance)

Seven years ago director Sheldon Wilson set out to tell a story involving crooked cops, a mafia godfather, murder, a public poisoning, Elvis Presley, prison gang leaders and a cocaine-addicted newspaper editor who printed it all. As it turns out, this was just the beginning. This film follows the extraordinary story of two innocent men whose lives are torn apart solely because of their race. Mike Borrelli, an Italian-American NYPD detective and his partner Bob Davis, one of the first African-American detectives in New York, are convicted of first-degree murder. But Borrelli and Davis are innocent. Law enforcement agents know it too, but they are hell bent to connect the murder to the mafia. Incredibly, they give the real killer immunity and place him into witness protection in exchange for his false testimony against the two officers. This incredibly moving story is a testament to their courage and a friendship that has spanned over 50 years.

Mentor
(USA) RT:80min

Director: Alix Lambert (in attendance)

In 2006 and 2010, Mentor, Ohio was selected as one of America's Top 100 Cities to Live, but over those five years, an alarming number of teens from this proud upper-class enclave committed suicide. Mentor follows the families of two victims as they uncover the shocking history of bullying at Mentor High School. They begin to realize what many of their children already knew: going to class meant a daily battle to simply survive. Families join forces in search of answers and justice, and eventually file an unprecedented lawsuit against the school district for the death of their children. Their attempt is met with willful denial and destroyed evidence. Through unflinching storytelling, Mentor captures just how disturbing and dangerous protecting the status quo can be.

Co-presented by Austin Gay and Lesbian Independent Film Festival. Entry is available to all 2014 AGLIFF Badge Holders. AGLIFF members must abide by AFF badge policy.

The Barkley Marathons: The Race That Eats Its Young
(USA) RT:91min

Director: Annika Iltis, Timothy Kane (both in attendance)

Every year 40 runners come from around the world to a small town in Tennessee to test their limits at a cult-like, quirky, and virtually impossible trail race. With a secret application process, unknown start time, and a course that changes every year, The Barkley Marathons has only had 10 people finish in 25 years. Inspired by a historic prison escape gone awry, what follows is an oddly inspiring story where pain has value, failure is spectacular, and it only costs $1.60.
