R.B. Brenner is the new director of the School of Journalism and the G.B. Dealey Regents Professor in Journalism at the University of Texas at Austin.He arrived at UT this summer from Stanford University, where he joined the faculty in 2010 after leaving The Washington Post. At The Post, his jobs included Metro Editor, Sunday Editor and Deputy Universal News Editor. He was one of the primary editors of the newspaper’s coverage of the Virginia Tech shootings, which was awarded a Pulitzer Prize in 2008, and played a leadership role in merging the digital and print newsrooms.His career as a newspaper reporter started in Winston-Salem, N.C.followed by reporting and editing jobs at papers in California and Florida. While at The Washington Post, R.B. served as the journalism consultant for the 2009 film “State of Play,” working with director Kevin Macdonald and actors Russell Crowe, Helen Mirren and Rachel McAdams; he appears on screen in a two-line speaking role, despite no discernible acting ability.
